Federal Program Description Brookhaven (BNL) Recovery Act Project - Non-Defense Environmental Cleanup. Funds are used to cleanup Department of Energy (DOE) contaminated sites.  ARRA funds provided supplemental funding for the cleanup of DOE sites and in some cases will expedite the cleanup schedule.  DEC did not receive any ARRA funds directly however, DOE will use ARRA funds to cleanup the Brookhaven National Lab site (DER Site No.  152009 on Long Island).   The ARRA funds will be used to accelerate radiological and hazardous waste remediation at this site by 2011. BNL remedial activities involve demolishing surplus ancillary structures associated with a nuclear research reactor; and removal of contaminated soil and buried pipelines for disposal of off-site, protecting the surrounding soil and groundwater.

ARRA Reporting DOE has committed to full transparency on the expenditure of stimulus funds. Since DOE is responsible for implementing this program, the reporting burden falls upon them.

National Total $483,000,000
NYS Share According to the DOE Non-Defense Environmental Cleanup spending plan $42,355,000 is earmarked for the Brookhaven National Lab project. See http://www.em.doe.gov/pdfs/emrecovery/FY2010DefenseBudgetBrief.pdf
Flow of Funds DOE will directly expend the funds on specific portions of remediation at the site. No non-federal matching funds are needed.
