Federal Program Description The goal of the Smart Grid Demonstration program is to demonstrate smart grid technologies in regions across the US that embody essential and salient characteristics of each region. Smart Grid projects will include regionally unique demonstrations to verify technology viability, quantify costs and benefits, and validate new business models for smart grid, at a scale that can be readily adapted and replicated around the country.  The Smart Grid Demonstration program is part of the Department of Energy’s Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Program which is striving to modernize the electric grid, enhance security and reliability of the energy infrastructure, energy storage research and development, demonstration and deployment, facilitate recovery from power disruptions, demonstrate and deploy smart grid technology, and provide worker training.

Flow of Funds The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) distributes the funds by competitive grant by issuing a Funding Opportunity Announcement.  Applicants  apply directly to DOE for funding.
